Everyone is using AI. Nobody is winning.

Everyone is using AI. Nobody is winning.

Everyone is using AI. Nobody is winning.

Everyone is using AI. Nobody is winning.

Everyone is using AI. Nobody is winning.

Hey,

This week on X was chaos.

Every other post was a new AI launch. Apps that build your entire business. Tools that write your content. Agents that do your job for you.

And every single one promises the same thing. More productivity. Less work. Faster results.

I watched the launches. Read the threads. Saw the hype.

And I asked myself a question.

Does AI actually make us more productive? Or do we just feel like we are?

Sounds obvious right? The answer should be yes.

But I went deep on this. Read studies. Looked at real data. And what I found made me rethink everything.

At the economic level, almost nothing changed.

One study surveyed 6,000 CEOs. 89% reported no measurable change in productivity. Despite everyone using AI now. Despite the billions invested. Despite the hype.

Another study found AI saves workers around 14 minutes per week.

Not per day. Per week.

Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu ran the numbers. His estimate? AI will contribute about 0.5% to productivity growth over the next decade.

His words: "It is better than zero. But it is disappointing relative to the promises."

So the economy is not moving. Companies are not seeing gains. The data is clear.

But here is the weird part.

When you use AI, it feels like magic. You write faster. Research faster. Get things done in minutes instead of hours.

So why is nothing moving at the big picture level?

Because of something nobody talks about.

The checking tax.

One study found that 37-40% of time saved by AI gets eaten by reviewing and correcting the output.

You save time generating. You lose time checking.

Think about a senior developer. He used to write code by hand. Slow but reliable. He knew every line because he wrote every line.

Now he uses AI. The code comes fast. But he cannot just copy and paste. He is a professional. He has to read every line. Check for errors. Test for bugs. Fix what AI broke.

Faster than before? Yes.

As fast as the hype promised? Not even close.

I experience this myself.

When I work on advanced Notion formulas with Claude, I cannot just ask and receive. The AI does not understand complex logic on the first try. I have to explain the whole system. Give examples. Watch it fail. Correct it. Try again. Guide it like a confused intern.

My goal was to save time. Instead I spend time managing the AI.

And there is another layer to this.

Researchers found a new phenomenon. They called it "AI brain fry."

Workers who constantly supervise AI outputs experience 12% more mental fatigue than those who do not use AI at all.

The tool meant to save energy is draining energy.

Now flip to the other side.

A junior developer uses AI. The output comes fast. The task gets marked done. Quick win.

But the quality screams AI. It screams beginner. Anyone with experience can tell in seconds.

I have a friend who studied development for only a year and a half. His website looks like a senior professional built it. He did not write a single line of code himself.

Impressive on the surface.

But here is the problem.

The junior now produces what the senior used to produce.

So what is the senior expected to produce now?

More. Better. Faster. Things that seemed impossible before are now the baseline.

The bar moved up. For everyone.

And this is where it clicked for me.

AI did not reduce the amount of work.

It raised the expectations.

Think about email. When email replaced letters, everyone thought communication would get easier. Faster. Simpler.

What actually happened?

More messages. Lower quality. Bleeding into evenings and weekends.

AI is following the same pattern.

We are not doing less work faster. We are doing more work faster. And mistaking that speed for progress.

Here is the question you need to sit with.

You use AI. You feel faster. You feel more productive.

But so does everyone else.

Your competitor is using AI. Your colleague is using AI. The person applying for your job is using AI.

Everyone moved forward.

But the distance between them stayed the same.

You feel like you are ahead because you got faster. But if everyone got faster at the same rate, nobody is ahead.

The positions did not change. Just the speed of the race.

And now the race has more laps.

Same race. More laps. Same position.

So here is the real question.

Look at your own life. Where are you using AI?

Did something actually change? Are you truly ahead? Or is everyone else also ahead, leaving you exactly where you were?

Did AI cut your work? Or did it just raise what is expected of you?

Did it make your life easier? Or did it make you busier while feeling productive?

Be honest with yourself.

This is controversial. Not everyone will agree. Some of you will push back hard. I want to hear it. Reply to this email. Tell me where you stand. I read every single one.

Here is the thing nobody wants to admit.

AI is not the problem. The hype is.

People think AI will save them. That the tool will do the work. That they can skip the thinking and just copy the output.

It does not work that way.

AI does not replace skill. It amplifies it. If you are scattered, AI makes you more scattered. If you are structured, AI makes you faster.

The difference is not the tool. The difference is you.

And that is why most people feel productive but are not. They are using AI to feel busy. Not to actually move forward.

If that sounds like you, the question is simple.

Are you going to keep chasing tools? Or are you going to build a system that actually works?

Because a year from now, there will be a new AI launch. And another one. And another one. Each one promising the same thing.

And you will still be in the same position. Unless something changes.
